Where do I find water polo programs in my area and how do I get started?
Q: Is there a water polo program in my area?

Q: Does my child need to be an excellent swimmer to start water polo?
A: Typically the best age to start is between 7 and 12, and rest assured the water polo program itself will make your child an excellent swimmer.
Q: What equipment will my child need to start water polo?
A: Your club will have its own spirit wear and team wear requirements. Typically, while a child can start playing in recreational type bathing suits, if they want to play more seriously, you will need to invest in your club's team wear. Generally equipment consists of a Team T-shirt, and a Team bathing Suit.
Q: I heard that water polo was a "tough sport". How dangerous is water polo activity for my child?
A: Water Polo is a physically demanding sport, but the benefits far outweigh any potential danger. Water polo makes kids fit, flexible and contributes greatly to their water safety. It is a contact sport, but since it takes place in the water, there is no potential for life threatening injuries or major limb fractures. BC also has an abundance of nationally certified coaches with ample experience in keeping children safe.
Q: How long is the water polo season?
A: That really depends on the age, experience and ambition of your child. Normally, water polo programs in major clubs around the Province are run on a year-round schedule, with maybe 4 - 6 weeks off in total throughout the year. However most clubs offer seasonal or introductory programs, where you only make a commitment to 3-4 months. The BCSSA - BC Summer Swimming Association runs seasonal water polo programs in conjunction with the Summer Swimming program May, June, July, August. Often these programs introduce active kids who love the water to water polo through their community summer swim club. Google the BCSSA to find the closest summer swim club offering water polo options.
